His Name Alone is Exalted

worshipPsalm 148:13: Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens.

Looking up the word exalted this morning, I discovered that it means high, lofty, glorious.  The name of the Lord is lifted up, it is high and it is glorious.

Peter Scazzero calls it ‘the dark night of the soul.’  It’s the place where God does His most transforming work in us. This is the place where we realize we can no longer go on pretending that everything is OK.  We can no longer go on pretending that our hurts and disappointments don’t matter to us.  We can no longer go on patching things up with a temporary fix. This is where we, for the first time, are willing to acknowledge where we fall short in being who God created us to be.  God brings us to this point for a reason – so that we will begin to allow Him to do His transforming work in us. The goal is that we be made perfect in love, that Christ’s love becomes our love both toward God and others.  We realize that love truly is the beginning and the end.

When we find ourselves in the middle of the dark night of our soul, our great temptation is to quit or go backwards, but if we remain still, listening for His voice, God will insert something of himself into our character that will mark the rest of our journey with him.

Are you in the dark night of your soul?  Does it seem that God has abandoned you? Do you feel as though your prayers bounce off the ceiling instead of ascending up to God’s loving ears?  Has darkness, weariness, a sense of failure or defeat, barrenness, emptiness, dryness descended upon you?  Can you not see what God is doing or see any fruit in your life?

We’ve all been there, in the dark night of our soul. It’s not a fun place to be, but it’s often the place where God has lead us for a reason.  Embrace this, my friends.  Ask God to do His work to free you from those things which keep you from truly loving Him and others.

Continue to lift up His name.  Exalt Him.  Praise Him. Glorify Him. Trust Him even though you have no idea what He is doing. Your dark night of the soul will become light and when it does, you’ll be a changed person.
