God’s Love in Action

Have you ever had one of those very rainy days when you really need to get out and run errands but what you really want to do is stay home? It’s pouring out today. I tried to wait it out and go when the rain let up, but then I realized the rain wasn’t going to stop anytime soon. If I waited it out, the day would be gone. So off I went.
I made a mad dash into the car. I’m very thankful for my conversion van that has a ramp that unfolds and drops down, making it very easy for me to get into the van. I managed to make it into the car without getting too soaked.
Going into the store wasn’t too bad either. I had to park a good distance from the store, but was not too far from an overhang that offered some protection from the rain. To my delight as I left the store, I was eagerly approached by a very kind gentleman with a huge umbrella offering to escort me to my car. Along with him were two young boys, also eager to offer their services to anyone who wanted some protection from the rain. Of course I instantly said yes!
They were from a local church- Covenant Fellowship -just across the DE/PA line. I admired this man for teaching kindness and selfless service to his young boys by setting an example. He didn’t simply tell the boys how they should spend a rainy Saturday morning, he showed them by actively demonstrating random acts of kindness to complete strangers. I guarantee that his boys will remember these rainy Saturday mornings for the rest of their lives.
Similarly, Jesus didn’t simply tell us how to be kind to others and offer help when needed, he showed us. He reached out to those in need, to the hurting, to those who were caught in the rainstorms of their life. He too offers us protection from the pelting rain that often leaves us emotionally cold and damp. But just as I was eager to accept the protection from this kind man and his sons, we too, have to accept the protection God and His son offers us. They are right there, eagerly waiting to shelter us with their big umbrellas.
Thank you kind man, whoever you are. I never did get your name. But I will never forget that you gave me protection from the rain on a very rainy day. God’s love in action. May God bless you and your two boys richly!
