Lesson Learned from Lavender

lavendarOne of my most favorite parts of summer is growing herbs.  I love to watch them grow since they require very little maintenance.  ‘Set ‘em and forget ‘em’ is my summer gardening mantra.

I have discovered that lavender is quite a hardy plant.  After our hard winter with two back-to-back, 4 foot snowstorms, I had expected to have a lavender funeral this spring.  But to my delight, it’s doing very well.  Apparently, it’s deep roots were not effected by the cold and snow.  Now due to the warmth of the sun, the flowers are nice and full and of course, it’s very fragrant.  The bumble bees can hardly stay away from it, neither can I.

My lavender reminds me that even though there are times when I feel like I’m buried under 4 feet of snow, I too can bounce back from a deep winter freeze. But I have learned I cannot do this by myself.  If takes the warmth of God’s mercy and grace to thaw my cold, fruitless and frozen heart.   Being deeply rooted and grounded in God and His word protects me from severe weather damage. Once exposed to the life-giving properties of God’s Sonshine, I can blossom once again into the person He created me to be.
