Do Things With God, Not For God

We had a great PWOC kickoff yesterday. Lots of new people eager to get into the word and build Christ-centered relationships with other women. I’m amazed at how God has worked to make this happen. Dover is a small Air Force Base whose weekly PWOC attendance this time last year was 5 people. Yesterday we had 20 and I know there will be more who will be joining us when classes start next week.
God wants do great things everywhere. I’m very convinced of this. But so many times we get in his way by doing things for Him instead of doing things with Him. If we’re not careful, our attempts to do God’s work can become an avenue to accomplish our own self-focused agenda. Our vision will usually revolve around what’s best for us, what makes us most comfortable and what might satisfy our needs. Instead of being God-focused, we are more self-focused.
Doing things with God instead of for God requires an undivided heart. David prayed to God for an undivided heart. (Psalm 86:11) Ezekiel tells us God replaces our stone hearts with an undivided heart. (Ez. 11:19) And Paul pleads with believers to live for the Lord with an undivided devotion. (1 Cor. 7:35) An undivided heart allows us to work with God, not for Him. When we work with God, we witness the working of His mighty Spirit, accomplishing things we could never do on our own. Working with God involves and impacts other people, not just ourselves. We recognize God’s ownership of everything.
Where God is at work, life change happens. Hearts are softened, attitudes are made tender, eyes see God in everyday life, ears hear His voice, hands reach out to others and feet walk in His truth. Does anything get any better? Does anything our world have to offer even come close to the satisfaction God brings to our souls? I think not, my friends.
Pray for an undivided heart that desires to do things with God, not for God. Then sit back and watch Him work. Get ready for God to rock your world. You’ll be totally amazed!
